A timeline of the main moments in the history of Portuguese tiles, put together by Az in 2014. It includes examples of patterned, figurative and ornamental wall coverings still found in situ that attest to the architectural nature of these decorations and sets them apart from those of other European countries. Also present are the multiple influences that Portuguese tiles incorporated and reinterpreted throughout more than five centuries of use. Finally, this synthesis is also revealing with regard to the continual references to the styles, techniques and motifs of earlier periods, in a dialogue between past and present that has shaped Portuguese tile history.
