Az3D: Scanning Portugal's Azulejos in their Architectural Context

Edward Triplett, from Duke University, led the Az3D: Scanning Portugal's Azulejos in their Architectural Context workshop (ARTis Now programme). With a total of nine participants, Az3D took place between the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. Some of the first results can be seen on the Az group's Sketchfab.

Professor Edward Triplett, from Duke University, will coordinate the workshop Az3D: Scanning Portugal’s Azulejos in their Architectural Context. The workshop, part of the programme ARTis now, will take place from 29 May to 2 June at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.

RESEARCH STAYS FOR THE INVENTORY, CATALOGUING AND REFERENCING OF AZULEJOS

From November 2022, Az – Azulejo Research Network will host up to four projects related to the inventory, cataloguing and referencing of azulejos, through research stay to be held in person or online, until June 2023. The programme will include the theoretical and practical training offered by the Az’s researchers and collaborators, and the development of a specific work plan.

1st Free Course on Azulejo Studies / History of Portuguese Tiles

The 1st Free Course on Azulejo Studies / History of Portuguese Tiles offered a chronological overview of the azulejos produced or applied in Portugal. It consisted of ten lessons taught by a group of specialized researchers, covering the most recent scientific perspectives on each period. The lessons were complemented by AzLab sessions focused on the course’s main topic, with the presence of foreign researchers, artists and museologists.

Led by Rosário Salema de Carvalho, the course consisted of an introductory session and four theoretical-practical sessions devoted to the different kinds of locations where azulejos can be found – churches, palaces, façades and new urban buildings. Each session featured a 15-min presentation of a specific case study by an invited speaker.

AzFlash aimed to present a specific tile work over lunch. The first and only edition took place in January 2017 and focused on the tile heritage of the University of Lisbon [University Campus].
